Build custom-sweater traceability by assigning every incoming yarn lot a controlled identity, preserving the supplier's original lot and color data, and recording where that material is issued—from knitting batch through finished SKU and shipped carton. The system should support both backward tracing from a defective garment to its yarn and forward tracing from a suspect yarn lot to every affected garment, hold and shipment.

Define the question traceability must answer
Traceability is not a folder of supplier invoices. It is a connected record that answers two directions. Backward tracing starts with a finished sweater or carton and identifies the style, color, production group and yarn lot used. Forward tracing starts with a named yarn lot and identifies all work in progress, finished units, test specimens, holds and shipments that may contain it.
This boundary matters when a shade, composition, strength, contamination or documentation concern appears. A reliable chain can narrow the affected population for investigation. It does not prove that the material conforms; laboratory results, inspection and responsible technical review may still be required.
Create one incoming-yarn identity record
At receipt, capture the supplier and mill where known, yarn article, fiber declaration, count and ply, color name and code, dye or production lot, purchase order, received date, quantity, package or cone identifiers, related certificate or test references and storage location. Preserve the supplier's original labels or clear label images. Do not replace a mill lot number with an internal warehouse code unless the two remain permanently linked.
Record discrepancies before release: missing lot labels, mixed lots under one delivery line, damaged packages, quantity variance or inconsistent color codes. Place uncertain material on a defined hold. A spreadsheet can be sufficient for a small program if identifiers are unique, edits are controlled and the physical labels match the data.
Segregate lots physically and digitally
Keep different lots identifiable in storage, during issue, beside machines and when unused yarn returns. Location alone is not an identity because cones move. Use legible lot cards, bins, pallets or another controlled method suited to the operation, and prevent loose cones from being returned to an unverified group.
ILO Better Work guidance for apparel fabric storage recommends identifying material by batch, style, lot and color and retaining records of which material was used in garment production. The same control principle applies to sweater yarn: identification, stock balance and production-use records must travel together.

Carry the lot through knitting and assembly
Issue yarn against a controlled style-color production instruction. Record lot and quantity issued, machine or knitting group where useful, date, returned balance and waste under the factory's process. For garments with multiple yarns, map each component: body, rib, trim, stripe, jacquard field or embellishment yarn. “Main yarn approved” cannot identify a contrasting yarn that caused the problem.
Avoid mixing lots within one garment unless a documented technical plan explicitly permits and controls it. If more than one acceptable lot is required for the order, define how production groups remain separate, how shade is assessed after the intended wash and finish, and whether groups may be mixed in one retail delivery or carton.
Connect tests and inspections to a population
A report is only useful when the tested specimen can be related to the shipped goods. Record who selected the specimen, its style, color, size, yarn or production lot, stage and date. Check that the report's description matches the controlled identity rather than assuming a familiar product name is enough.
During inline and final inspection, verify lot segregation where it affects shade or material risk and sample across relevant groups. If a result fails, place the named population on hold while the responsible parties define investigation, containment, retesting, sorting or other disposition. Do not extend one passing result to unrelated lots without a justified sampling and traceability rationale.

Map released goods to cartons
After quality release, connect accepted garment groups to SKU quantities and carton identities. If several controlled lots ship, decide whether cartons remain lot-homogeneous or contain a documented mix. The packing list need not expose confidential internal detail, but the retained traceability record should allow a complaint, warehouse hold or test concern to be mapped to specific cartons and destinations.
Repacking, repair and replacement can break the chain. Record movements into and out of hold, new carton numbers and the approval that restored release status. Never copy the original lot assignment onto replacement units without verifying their actual material source.
Audit the chain with a mock trace
Before shipment, select one finished carton and trace backward to the yarn receipt, then select one yarn lot and trace forward to every issued, remaining, held and packed quantity. Reconcile units and material balances at a level appropriate to the process. Investigate unexplained gaps, duplicate identifiers and records edited after the event.
The goal is not a perfect mass-balance claim unless the applicable certification or buyer program requires and defines one. The goal is a credible, bounded chain that supports quality containment and document relevance. Certification-specific traceability must follow the current standard, certificate scope and transaction requirements rather than this general guide.
