Classify custom sweater workmanship defects before bulk inspection by connecting each observable issue to safety, legal compliance, function, saleability and appearance. Build a style-specific photo library for knitting, linking, finishing, trims and packing; then assign critical, major or minor consequences and pair those classes with an agreed sampling plan. A generic “good quality” instruction cannot produce a consistent pass/fail decision.

Define the standard before defining a defect
A defect is a departure from an agreed requirement, not simply something an inspector dislikes. The baseline may include the approved sample, tech pack, measurement chart, yarn and color standards, construction details, finish range, label and packing specification, test requirements and destination-market obligations. If those references conflict, inspection becomes negotiation.
Issue one controlled quality file with a revision number. Identify which reference governs appearance and which governs measurable requirements. For intentionally washed, distressed, sprayed or irregular surfaces, show both acceptable variation and unacceptable outcomes. Without boundaries, a desired vintage effect can be rejected as uneven—or a true process fault can be excused as design.
Classify consequence, not defect names alone
Critical, major and minor categories are useful only when their meanings are agreed. A critical defect generally presents an unacceptable safety or regulatory risk. A major defect is likely to prevent normal use, make the garment unsaleable or cause a reasonable customer return. A minor defect is a limited deviation from the agreed standard that does not materially prevent use or sale.
The same physical issue can change class with context. A small mark hidden inside a seam may be minor while the same mark on a pale front chest can be commercially major. A loose decorative thread is different from an unsecured structural end that can open a join. Children’s products, functional trims and mandatory information may require different treatment from an adult fashion pullover. The buyer and qualified compliance parties must set product-specific rules.
Build a knitting-defect library
For knitted panels and bodies, define examples for dropped or missed stitches, ladders, holes, yarn breaks, knots, foreign fibers, needle lines, barré, uneven tension, stitch distortion and pattern errors. For cables, jacquard or intarsia, include misplaced repeats, incorrect scale, missing color areas and distorted motifs. Record whether repair is permitted and what repaired appearance is acceptable.
Location, size, frequency and visibility matter. One tiny irregular stitch in a textured hidden area does not have the same consequence as an open loop beside an armhole or a repeated needle line across every front panel. Photograph findings at useful distance and close-up, and identify the garment area so the defect can be traced to a process rather than counted without context.
Inspect linking and seams as functional structures
Check shoulders, armholes, side seams, sleeve joins, neck attachments and any hand-finished areas for open seams, skipped loops, misalignment, puckering, excessive bulk, exposed ends and asymmetry. Lightly handling the seam may reveal an opening that a flat visual check misses, but any pull or function test must follow an agreed method to avoid damaging acceptable goods.
Compare paired areas: left and right sleeves, shoulder joins, side seams and armholes. Confirm that pattern lines, stripes and cable positions meet the approved alignment rules. Inspect inside workmanship as well as the retail-facing surface because unsecured ends or missed loops may develop into failure after wear.

Separate finishing variation from workmanship faults
After the complete wash and finish, check stains, oil marks, color transfer, excessive fuzz, unintended pilling, harsh or inconsistent handfeel, distortion, poor pressing, scorch or shine, residual odor where relevant, and visible shade differences. Measurements and laboratory performance belong in their own records; appearance alone cannot verify dimensional stability, colorfastness or fiber content.
Specialty finishes need a sealed visual range across representative garments, not a single tightly cropped image. Approve front, back, sleeves and important details under consistent lighting. Define whether variation is judged within one garment, between pieces, between lots or against a master sample.
Include trims, labels and packaging
List missing, loose, broken, sharp, discolored or incorrectly positioned buttons, zippers, patches, embroidery, labels and hangtags. Verify style, color and size identity throughout the garment, barcode and individual pack. A beautifully knitted sweater with the wrong size label or SKU barcode can still be unsaleable.
Packaging checks should cover the approved folding method, protection, sticker placement, assortment, quantity and carton marks. Treat packaging damage and garment defects separately so corrective action reaches the responsible process. Use the buyer-approved label and packing schedule rather than asking final inspectors to infer requirements onsite.
Connect classification to acceptance sampling
ISO 28590:2017 introduces the ISO 2859 family of attribute-sampling schemes and provides guidance on choosing an appropriate inspection system. A buyer using acceptance sampling must still define lot size, inspection level, sampling plan, defect classes, Acceptance Quality Limits where applicable, and the associated acceptance and rejection numbers. “Use AQL” is incomplete.
An AQL-based pass is a statistical lot decision based on the inspected sample; it does not certify that every unit is defect-free. Critical-risk controls may require additional prevention, testing or screening beyond a random visual sample. Likewise, laboratory properties and measurements need their specified methods and decision rules.
Use inspection data to correct the process
Track defect type, location, size, style, color, lot, production stage and frequency. Ten occurrences of one open-linking fault suggest a systematic cause; ten unrelated minor observations tell a different story. Correct repeat causes during knitting, linking or finishing rather than waiting for final inspection to become a sorting operation.
