When a custom sweater order has an unusual odor, hold the affected goods and separate the possible sources before deciding on rework or shipment. Compare the garment, polybag, paper inserts and carton individually; map the issue by style, color, size, lot and packing time; review the approved materials and finishing records; and involve a qualified laboratory when chemical compliance or safety is in question. Smell is a useful complaint signal, but it cannot identify a chemical or prove that a product is safe.

Do not hide the symptom
Do not spray fragrance, add deodorizer, air goods briefly and immediately reseal them, or change packaging without recording the original condition. These actions may mask the signal, introduce another substance or destroy evidence needed to find the source. First identify the affected cartons, stop release and preserve representative unopened and opened samples.
Record who noticed the odor, when, where, under what opening conditions and how it was described. Use neutral descriptors such as musty, solvent-like, smoky, sour, oily or plastic-like rather than naming a chemical without evidence. Note whether irritation, visible residue, dampness, staining or damaged packaging is present. If anyone has symptoms or a strong unknown exposure is suspected, stop the sensory review and follow the site’s health-and-safety process.
Separate the garment from its packaging
Open a controlled sample in a ventilated, appropriate inspection area and isolate each component: sweater, tissue, silica or desiccant pack, tag, adhesive label, printed insert, polybag and carton. Compare an unpacked retention sample, a newly packed unit and an older sealed unit when available. The question is whether the odor follows the textile, one trim, the packaging system, storage conditions or time under seal.

Map the scope before choosing a remedy
Sample across the start, middle and end of production; different colors and sizes; yarn or finish lots; packing lines; carton levels; and warehouse locations. Record affected and unaffected units. A single open carton cannot show whether the issue is isolated, systematic or introduced during transport. Do not average away a concentrated pocket by mixing affected goods with clean stock.
Keep this investigation distinct from routine moisture and mould control. Musty odor plus damp or visibly affected packaging requires an appropriate contamination response, while a plastic-like odor concentrated in an empty bag may point elsewhere. Both need evidence, but neither conclusion should be made from the descriptor alone.
Trace every input that changed
Compare the suspect order with the approved sample and previous acceptable production. Review yarn supplier and lot, dyes or finishing inputs, washing and drying route, spotting agents, machine or maintenance oils, pressing, storage, polybag resin or print, adhesive labels, carton and transport history. Ask what changed, when it changed and which units received that input.
Obtain the relevant supplier documentation and safety data sheets for chemicals used in the process, but do not treat paperwork as proof that the finished sweater meets the buyer’s restricted-substance list or destination rules. If the source remains unclear, give the laboratory the product, suspected materials, process history and target-market requirements so it can recommend a defensible test scope. A broad claim such as “chemical test passed” is not meaningful without analytes, methods, limits, sample identity and results.
Use smell as evidence, not a safety test
U.S. OSHA defines an odor threshold as the lowest airborne concentration detectable by smell. CDC/NIOSH guidance also explains that people vary in odor detection and may experience olfactory fatigue, so smell should not be relied on to warn of hazardous substances. The practical product-quality conclusion is bounded: a noticeable odor can justify investigation and a commercial hold, but weak or absent odor cannot establish chemical compliance, and strong odor does not identify its cause.
Agree the buyer’s acceptance method before releasing reworked goods. That may include a controlled comparison panel, a packaging-seal trial, repeat inspection and targeted laboratory results where needed. Define the sample condition, acclimation or opening time, assessors, reference, rating or pass/fail rule and escalation route. Do not invent a universal “odor-free after 24 hours” rule.

Release only after the corrective route is verified
If controlled airing, additional drying, packaging replacement or another rework is technically justified, approve it on a limited trial first. Check that the route does not change shade, hand feel, measurement, print, trim, care behavior or packaging performance. Reinspect representative finished units after they have been packed for an agreed period, not only immediately after treatment.
Document the root-cause conclusion, affected quantity, disposition, rework parameters, verification result and preventive action. If the cause is unconfirmed or compliance evidence is inadequate, keep the shipment on hold and seek qualified advice. A delivery deadline does not convert uncertainty into acceptance.
