Control sweater mould risk by proving garments are dry after every wet process, measuring moisture with an agreed method, checking cartons and packing materials, and validating the complete pack against the actual shipping route. Do not rely on touch, one room-humidity reading or a universal moisture number. Define fiber-specific limits, sampling locations, hold rules and traceable records before production.

Why dry-looking sweaters can still arrive damaged
Garments can retain moisture after washing, steaming, stain treatment or humid storage, especially in thick ribs, folded plackets, pockets and dense seams. Paper, cardboard, timber and textile fibers can also exchange moisture with surrounding air. When a sealed pack moves through changing climates, condensation may affect garments or packaging even if the carton looked acceptable at loading.
Shipment outcomes depend on more than one relative-humidity reading. Fiber blend, finish, initial moisture, carton construction, polybag permeability, container condition, route, temperature cycling and transit time all matter. Treat mould prevention as a verified system, not a desiccant purchase.

Separate moisture content from ambient humidity
Room relative humidity describes the air; it is not the garment's moisture content. ASTM D2654-22 covers oven-drying procedures for measuring moisture content or pickup and moisture regain in textile materials. Its scope includes natural and man-made fibers, blends and forms from fiber through finished fabric, subject to stated method limitations.
A handheld meter can support rapid screening, but its result depends on calibration, material, thickness, compression and measurement principle. Agree whether it is a screening tool or acceptance instrument. For disputes or specification setting, use a qualified laboratory method and document sampling, conditioning and calculation instead of turning a meter display into an unsupported universal limit.
Map the slowest-drying garment locations
During development, measure representative high-risk zones: folded neck ribs, cuffs, hem ribs, pocket bags, plackets, shoulder seams and multi-layer trims. Compare sizes, gauges and yarn blends. A fine-gauge cotton pullover and a coarse wool-blend cardigan may not dry or equilibrate at the same rate.
Use the production-intended wash, extraction, drying and finishing route. Record when each process ends, how garments are spaced and when testing occurs. If steaming or spot cleaning happens after the nominal drying stage, repeat the relevant dryness check before folding and sealing.

Set a buyer-approved sampling and hold plan
Define the number of garments per style, color, size and finishing lot, plus exact measurement locations. Sample across the start, middle and end of packing and include the thickest or slowest-drying constructions. Random carton checks alone can miss a wet finishing lot concentrated in one part of production.
Write the response to a failed or unstable reading: stop packing, segregate the affected lot, investigate the wet process and recondition or dry under an approved route. Retest a defined sample before release. Never mix reworked units into bulk without lot identification, because recurrence then becomes impossible to trace.
Inspect packaging as part of the moisture system
Check polybags, tissue, labels, cartons and paper inserts before use. They should be clean, dry, odour-free and stored away from floors and walls where local dampness or contamination can occur. ILO Better Work apparel guidance recommends fabric storage on racks or shelves rather than floors and records identifying roll, batch, style, lot and color; the same traceability principle helps investigate finished-goods issues.
Do not assume more desiccant is automatically safer. Select its type, quantity, placement and packaging compatibility through a logistics or packaging assessment. Prevent direct contact where leakage or dust could mark garments, and address any warning, disposal or destination-market requirement.
Validate the complete pack and route
Run a packaging trial using production-intended folding, polybag, tissue, carton fill, liner and desiccant strategy. Consider the actual origin climate, port dwell, sea or air route, season, destination and warehouse conditions. A short air shipment and a long ocean route with large temperature cycles are not equivalent exposures.
Inspect the container before loading for holes, damaged seals, standing water, strong odour, contamination and visibly wet flooring. Photograph the empty container, floor, walls, doors, loaded condition and seal number. These records do not prevent condensation, but they show whether release and loading controls were followed.
Keep evidence for a claim decision
Retain the approved method and limits, device calibration status, room-condition logs, garment readings, failed-lot disposition, packaging inspection, container photos, packing date, carton range and shipment reference. If mould or odour is reported, quarantine affected cartons and preserve unopened examples before broad rework or disposal.
Ask the receiver to record arrival date, container and carton condition, affected carton numbers, location pattern, photographs and any data logger output. A pattern near a container wall may indicate a different pathway from scattered units linked to one finishing lot. Evidence guides corrective action; appearance alone rarely proves a single cause.
