Approve a sweater pocket on the finished garment, after the intended wash and finish, rather than from a paper sketch or a loose pocket piece. Lock the pocket type, opening, dimensions, placement landmarks, bag depth, attachment, support and intended load. Then check appearance, access, symmetry, stretch and recovery in representative sizes. A pocket that looks correct empty can sag, gape, twist or distort the body once it is worn, packed or filled.

Why a pocket changes the whole sweater

A pocket adds weight, an opening and a local seam or knit boundary to a flexible garment. The body may stretch while the pocket bag, opening edge or reinforcement resists that movement. If the pocket is positioned from an unstable edge, it can drift after finishing or grading. If the bag is too deep, heavy or loose, it can pull the front down. If the opening is too tight, the wearer may force it and damage the seam.

Different constructions create different risks. A knitted patch pocket, a fully fashioned pocket, a cut-and-sew bag, a welt, a kangaroo pocket and a hidden side-seam pocket should not share one generic “pocket standard.” Yarn composition, gauge, stitch, rib, lining, interfacing, pocket contents and care route also affect the result. The buyer should decide which outcome matters most when comfort, clean appearance, access and cost conflict.

Define the pocket in the tech pack

Identify pocket type, front or back view, left/right orientation, opening shape, finished width and height, bag depth, entry angle, top edge, corners, seam allowance, stitch route and closure if any. Mark the position from stable landmarks such as center front, high-point shoulder, side seam, armhole, hem, placket or a defined artwork feature. State whether dimensions are taken before or after washing and conditioning.

For a patch pocket, show the visible outline, corner radius, edge finish, reinforcement and whether the pocket should follow the body or remain intentionally distinct. For an internal or side-seam pocket, show the opening, bag material, entry support and how it joins the body. Do not rely on “same as reference photo”; a photo cannot establish bag depth, hidden seam construction or graded placement.

Separate placement from pocket stability

First verify that the pocket sits where the design intends. Use the same flat-lay orientation and conditioning state for every comparison. Measure center, side and bottom offsets, then inspect left-right symmetry and interaction with cables, jacquard, spray effects, plackets, ribs and seams. A pocket can be dimensionally correct yet look misplaced if the body or motif has shifted.

Next assess stability. Look for rippling around the opening, corner lift, seam puckering, bag show-through, twisting, excessive draw-in and a front panel that hangs differently on the pocket side. Review the empty pocket and then apply the agreed use simulation. Record the load and handling method; “tested with a phone” is not a reproducible requirement unless the buyer defines what that means.

Use support carefully on a stretchy knit

Support can limit distortion during sewing, but an overly rigid insert may change hand, drape and comfort. Ask the development team to identify support material, dimensions, placement and removal or wash behavior. For fine or open knits, a sewing aid used during attachment is not necessarily a permanent component. Confirm what remains in the finished garment and whether it is visible from the face or reverse.

Seam and stitch choices also matter. Verify feed control, stitch route, corner reinforcement, thread tension and the point where stress transfers into the body. Do not copy a universal stitch length, bar-tack count or reinforcement width. Use the product's yarn, gauge, pocket shape, intended load and buyer standard to set the requirement.

Approve after wash, pressing and conditioning

Run the complete production-intent route: knitting or panel preparation, linking or sewing, wash, dye or spray where relevant, drying, steaming and pressing. Then allow the sample to condition under the agreed method before measuring. Compare pocket placement, opening, bag depth, body length, side balance and surface appearance with the pre-finish reference.

Check access with the intended hand and garment fit. Confirm that the opening does not catch fingers, that the bag does not fold into the entry and that the pocket can be used without pulling the front panel into a wave. For a pocket carrying contents, observe standing, sitting, bending and arm movement as appropriate to the product. Empty and loaded appearances should both be recorded.

Cotton Incorporated's technical bulletin on cotton sweaters notes that very loose knit constructions can develop excessive bagginess and that bands may be knitted tightly to counter distortion, while excessive tightness can reduce easy stretch and comfort. The principle is relevant to pocket development: local control must be balanced against the garment's intended movement, not maximized without regard to hand or fit.

Use a named strength method only when it fits the question

If the concern is localized weakness at a pocket reinforcement or bar-tack, ASTM D7506/D7506M-17(2025) describes a pocket-reinforcement test using a grab procedure and reports the failure mode and location. That scope is narrower than “the pocket is durable.” The laboratory, buyer or qualified adviser must confirm that the specimen and method represent the actual construction.

A laboratory result should remain separate from visual placement, access and wear approval. A strong bar-tack does not prove that the pocket bag will not sag; a good-looking empty pocket does not prove seam strength. Define specimen stage, pocket area, conditioning, force or exposure, acceptance rule and responsible approver before testing. Do not publish a universal force limit for every sweater.

Control grading and bulk variation

Review at least the smallest, base and largest sizes when the pocket sits near an armhole, side seam, hem or placket. Decide whether the pocket scales proportionally, uses a fixed offset or follows a design landmark. Check that the opening remains accessible and that a pocket does not enter a seam, rib or motif after grading.

At first bulk, inspect the pocket before and after finishing where possible, then on finished garments across colors, sizes, operators and production timing. Confirm pocket identity, placement, opening, seam, reinforcement, bag condition and body balance. If yarn, pocket material, support or finish changes, hold the affected group and repeat the relevant approval.

  • Interaction with motifs, ribs, plackets and seams is reviewed.
  • Support material and attachment route are approved on the actual knit.

  • The full wash, dye/spray, dry and press route is included.
  • Small, base and large sizes are checked where grading changes risk.
  • Any strength method has a named scope, specimen and acceptance rule.
  • First bulk and final inspection record pocket and body condition.
